Millets for Weight Loss: Jowar, Bajra and Ragi Rotis

Millets are having a moment, and most of the noise says they melt fat. They do not. What they do is simpler: they are filling, they add fibre, and they give a plate some variety when you are tired of wheat and rice every single day.

Here is a plain look at jowar, bajra, ragi and foxtail millet, how to make rotis that hold together, three easy recipes, and how much to eat. Numbers are approximate and your own needs may differ.

The four millets you will actually use

  • Jowar (sorghum): mild and a little sweet. A roti has about 110 to 120 calories and around 3 g of protein. Easy to digest, good for a first try.
  • Bajra (pearl millet): earthy and warming, which is why it shows up in winter. Slightly higher in iron. Our post on bajra, makki and jowar roti in winter has more on it.
  • Ragi (finger millet): dark and rich in calcium. Works well as roti, dosa, porridge or chilla.
  • Foxtail millet (kangni): small yellow grains that cook like rice. A decent swap for a bowl of white rice or poha.

What millets can and cannot do

They have more fibre than polished rice and more minerals than maida. Because the fibre slows eating and digestion, many people feel full for longer. That can make it easier to eat a little less without feeling deprived.

But a millet roti is not a low calorie food. Two jowar rotis cost about the same as two wheat rotis. If you add extra ghee, or eat four instead of two, the benefit disappears. Weight loss still comes from eating a bit less than you burn over weeks, and millets are one useful way to get there.

How to make millet rotis that do not crumble

  1. Use hot water. Pour just boiled water over the flour and mix with a spoon first, since it will be too hot to touch.
  2. Knead while warm. Knead for a few minutes with wet palms until the dough is smooth.
  3. Do not roll hard. Pat the ball flat between your palms, or on a wet cloth, or between two sheets of butter paper.
  4. Mix in a little wheat flour at first. Three parts millet to one part wheat is a gentle start, and you can reduce the wheat over a couple of weeks.
  5. Cook on a hot tawa. Turn once, then puff over the flame if you like.

Three easy recipes

1. Jowar and methi roti

Mix 1 cup jowar flour with a handful of chopped methi leaves, a pinch of ajwain and salt. Knead with hot water and pat into 3 or 4 rotis. Eat with dal or curd.

2. Ragi chilla

Mix 1/2 cup ragi flour with 2 tablespoons curd, grated carrot, chopped onion and green chilli. Add water to make a pouring batter and rest it for 10 minutes. Cook thin with a few drops of oil. Serve with mint chutney.

3. Foxtail millet khichdi

Wash 1/2 cup foxtail millet and 1/4 cup moong dal. Pressure cook with chopped vegetables, turmeric, salt and about 3 cups of water for 3 whistles. Finish with a teaspoon of ghee and a bowl of curd on the side.

How much to eat

For most adults, 2 millet rotis at lunch and 1 or 2 at dinner is plenty, with dal or a protein, and a large portion of vegetables. A bowl of cooked millet khichdi or foxtail millet rice is about one cup. If you are thinking about the whole plate, the Indian plate method shows how to split it.

Introduce millets slowly. A sudden jump in fibre can cause gas or bloating, so start with one meal a day and drink enough water.

Simple ways to fit millets into a week

  • Monday and Thursday: jowar roti with dal and sabzi
  • Tuesday: ragi chilla for breakfast
  • Wednesday: bajra roti with sarson or palak sabzi in the colder months
  • Friday: foxtail millet khichdi with curd
  • Weekend: back to your usual food, no guilt

Who should check first

If you have a thyroid condition, kidney disease, or take regular medicines, please ask your doctor before making millets a daily staple. Some millets are best limited in certain conditions, and that advice should come from someone who knows your history.

Common questions

Is ragi or jowar better for weight loss?

Neither is better in every case. Jowar is lighter and easy on the stomach, ragi has more calcium, and bajra is warming and filling. Pick the one you will actually eat regularly, and rotate them.

Can I eat millet roti every day?

Most healthy adults can. Variety helps, so mixing jowar, bajra and ragi through the week is a good habit. If you have a thyroid condition, kidney problem or take medicines, please check with your doctor or nutritionist first.

Why does my millet roti crumble?

Millets have no gluten, so the dough does not hold together like wheat. Use hot water for kneading, knead while the dough is still warm, and pat the roti on a wet cloth or butter paper instead of rolling it hard.

Are millets low in calories?

Not really. A jowar roti has about the same calories as a wheat roti. The benefit is that many people feel fuller on the fibre, and it adds variety to the plate. It is the portion that decides the calories.

Can millets replace rice?

Yes, for some meals. Foxtail or little millet cooked like rice, or a millet khichdi, can stand in for white rice. Start with one meal a day and see how you feel.
