7 Day Non Vegetarian Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss

Most Indian diet plans online are vegetarian by default, and if you eat eggs, fish or chicken you end up adjusting them yourself. This post goes the other way. It is a 7 day non vegetarian Indian diet plan built around ordinary home cooking: roti, rice, dal, sabzi, and one egg, fish or chicken dish a day.

It is a general starting point, not a plan made for your body, so read the notes after the table before you begin.

How does a non vegetarian plan help with weight loss?

Eggs, fish and chicken give you complete protein, which keeps you full for longer and helps you hold on to muscle while you lose fat. The catch is the cooking. A chicken curry with a cup of oil can carry more calories than the roti beside it. So this plan keeps the protein portion fixed at about 100 g cooked meat or fish, or 2 eggs, and puts the rest of the plate into dal, vegetables and a measured amount of roti or rice.

The 7 day non vegetarian Indian diet plan

Portions are for an average adult with a desk job. One roti means a medium 6 inch roti. One katori is about 150 ml. Drink 2 to 2.5 litres of water through the day, unless your doctor has told you otherwise.

How to cook the protein so it stays light

  • Chicken curry: use 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil for a whole pot, take the skin off, and build the gravy on onion, tomato and spices instead of cream or cashew paste.
  • Grilled or tikka: marinate in hung curd and spices, and cook in an oven, air fryer or tawa with a brush of oil.
  • Fish: steam, bake, or make a thin tomato curry. Deep fried fish adds a lot of calories without adding protein.
  • Eggs: boiled, bhurji or omelette with vegetables. Keep the oil to 1 teaspoon.

Portions that work on a plate

  • Chicken or fish: about 100 to 150 g cooked, roughly the size of your palm.
  • Eggs: 1 to 2 whole eggs, with extra egg whites if you want more protein.
  • Roti or rice: 2 rotis or 1 katori of cooked rice per meal, not both together.
  • Vegetables: fill half the plate.
  • Dal or curd: 1 katori at lunch or dinner.

Should I eat fish once a week?

Eating fish at least once or twice a week is a good habit, and the plan above includes it on two days. Oily fish such as bangda (mackerel) and sardine bring omega 3 fats, while rohu and katla are leaner and cheaper in most cities. If fish is hard to find near you, swap it for eggs or chicken that day.

Common mistakes on a non vegetarian plan

  • Too much meat, too little dal and sabzi. A bigger protein portion does not make weight loss faster, it just crowds out fibre.
  • Fried and processed meat. Chicken nuggets, sausages and fried fish quickly undo a good day.
  • Heavy gravies on weekends. One rich meal is fine. Make it one meal, not a whole weekend.
  • Skipping vegetables. Salad and sabzi are what make the plate filling at low calories.

Where a general plan stops

A printed plan cannot know your height, your thyroid, your cholesterol or what your family kitchen can manage. For ideas that fit your goal, see our post on an Indian diet plan for weight loss and the guide to a diet plan for weight loss for men. If you are trying to work out how much to eat, our 1200 calorie plan post and the calorie calculator help. You can also see how it works on our plans page and meet the nutritionists.

If you have diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney problems, high blood pressure, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take regular medicine, please talk to your doctor before changing your diet.

Common questions

Can I eat chicken every day and still lose weight?

Yes, if the portion is sensible (about 100 to 150 g cooked) and it is cooked with little oil. Variety still matters, so mix in eggs, fish, dal and paneer across the week.

How many eggs a day is fine?

For most healthy adults 1 to 2 whole eggs a day fits easily into a weight loss plan. If you have high cholesterol, diabetes or heart disease, ask your doctor how many eggs suit you.

Which fish is best for weight loss?

Rohu, katla, pomfret, surmai and bangda are all common Indian choices. Bangda and sardines carry more natural fat, which is useful in small portions. How you cook it matters more than which fish you pick.

Is butter chicken or restaurant chicken curry okay?

Occasionally, in a smaller portion. Restaurant gravies usually carry a lot of oil, cream and butter, so a home cooked curry with onion tomato masala is a better everyday option.

How fast will I lose weight on this plan?

A steady pace for most people is about half a kilo a week. This is a general pattern, not a promise, and your result depends on your portions, sleep, movement and consistency.
