Navratri Vrat Diet Plan: How to Fast Without Gaining Weight

Every year the same thing happens. Someone fasts for nine days, feels virtuous, and steps on the scale on Dussehra to find the number went up.

It is not the fasting. It is what fills the plate. Sabudana vada, kuttu puri, singhare ke atte ka halwa and three cups of sweet chai add up to more calories than a normal day, and they are low on protein, so you are hungry again in two hours.

We have helped people through Navratri since 2016. Here is what works in a real Indian kitchen.

Start with one rule: protein and curd in every vrat meal

Sabudana is almost pure starch. It is fine, but alone it spikes and drops. Pair it with peanuts and a bowl of curd and it holds you for much longer. Same for kuttu and samak: add a sabzi and curd rather than eating it alone.

Easy protein for a fast: curd, paneer, makhana, peanuts, milk, and nuts in small handfuls.

A simple vrat day

Morning: Warm water, then a glass of milk or a small bowl of fruit with a handful of makhana.

Lunch: Two small kuttu or singhare rotis, lauki or pumpkin sabzi made in a spoon of ghee, and a bowl of curd.

Evening: Roasted makhana or a fruit plate with a few almonds. Tea with little sugar.

Dinner: Samak khichdi with vegetables and peanuts, a bowl of curd or raita, and a small piece of fruit.

That is about the same hunger control as a normal day, with far fewer fried bites.

What to go easy on

  • Anything deep fried: sabudana vada, aloo tikki, pakora, puri. Have one, not five.
  • Vrat mithai and halwa. Small portion, after the meal, not on an empty stomach.
  • Sweetened drinks and packaged vrat namkeen. Home roasted makhana beats a packet every time.

Eat on time, and drink water

Skipping meals until evening leads to a big oily dinner. Eat small, every few hours. Keep water, nimbu pani without much sugar, or coconut water close by. Keep exercise light during the fast, like a 20 to 30 minute walk.

When to stop and eat

If you feel dizzy, weak, or unwell, break the fast. This is not a test. If you have diabetes, thyroid or blood pressure problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take regular medicine, speak to your doctor before fasting. Do not change your medicine for a fast.
