Savory Besan Bread Toast

Bread slices dipped in spiced besan batter and toasted on a tawa — a protein-leaning breakfast toast.

This is the bread snack for when the fridge is nearly empty. A thick besan batter with onion and green chilli, a slice of bread dipped in it, and a few minutes on the tawa. It is closer to a pakora on bread than to French toast.

Health Benefits

Besan adds plant protein to plain toast. Prefer whole-wheat bread and light oil.

Besan is gram flour, so the coating adds some protein to plain bread. The batter does most of the flavouring, so you need very little oil to brown it.

Pro Tips

  • →Batter not too thin.
  • →Medium heat.
  • →Serve immediately.
  • →Keep the batter thick enough to cling to a spoon. Thin batter slides off and the bread goes soggy.
  • →Dip each slice for only a second. Stale bread holds up better than very fresh bread.
  • →Cook on medium heat so the besan cooks through before the outside darkens.
