Low-Fat Paneer Makhani: A Healthier Take on a Classic
A wholesome Indian recipe crafted for health-conscious eating: nutritious, delicious, and easy to make at home.

Paneer Makhani is a beloved North Indian curry known for its rich, creamy tomato-cashew gravy. At DietGhar, we've reinvented this classic to be lighter and healthier without compromising on taste. By swapping heavy cream with Greek yogurt and using minimal butter, we've created a dish that's high in protein, low in saturated fat, and suitable for those managing diabetes or aiming for weight loss. The natural sweetness of tomatoes and a touch of honey balance the tang, while kasuri methi adds that signature aroma. Serve it with whole wheat roti or cauliflower rice for a complete meal.
Ingredients
How to Make It
Soak cashews in hot water for 15 minutes. Drain and blend with 2 tbsp water into a smooth paste. Set aside.
In a blender, puree the tomatoes until smooth.
Heat butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add tomato puree and cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the raw smell disappears and the puree thickens.
Add Kashmiri red chili powder and cook for another minute.
Stir in the cashew paste and cook for 2-3 minutes until well incorporated.
Add 1 cup water and salt. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes until the gravy thickens slightly.
Reduce heat to low and gently whisk in the Greek yogurt. Do not boil after adding yogurt to prevent curdling.
Add garam masala, crushed kasuri methi, and honey (if using). Mix well.
Gently fold in the paneer cubes and simmer for 2-3 minutes until heated through.
Garnish with coriander leaves and ginger juliennes.
Serve hot with whole wheat roti, brown rice, or cauliflower rice.

Health Benefits
This low-fat Paneer Makhani is packed with protein from paneer and Greek yogurt, which helps in muscle repair and keeps you satiated. Tomatoes provide lycopene, an antioxidant linked to heart health and cancer prevention. Cashews add healthy monounsaturated fats, while kasuri methi aids digestion. By using minimal butter and no cream, this dish is diabetic-friendly and supports weight management. It's also a good source of calcium and vitamin B12 from the dairy.
Pro Tips

- →Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed.
- →Use fresh paneer for best texture; avoid frozen paneer as it can become rubbery.
- →For a vegan version, replace paneer with tofu and Greek yogurt with cashew cream.
